How to Make Your Sourdough Bread Last Longer (Without Losing That Crusty Magic)
There’s nothing quite like a fresh loaf of sourdough crackly crust, chewy crumb, and that signature tang that only time and fermentation can bring. At Tutu’s, our sourdough is crafted the slow way naturally fermented, never rushed. But once you’ve brought it home, how do you keep that bakery-fresh feeling going?
Here are our tried-and-tested tips to help you get the most out of your loaf (and waste less, too).
1. Keep It Whole for as Long as Possible
If you’ve bought a whole loaf, resist the urge to slice it all at once (Except you are freezing). Keeping the loaf intact preserves moisture and slows staling. Slice as you go, your toast will thank you.
2. Skip the Fridge (Seriously)
Refrigeration actually speeds up the staling process for sourdough. Instead, store your bread at room temperature in a paper bag, cotton bread bag, or even loosely wrapped in a clean tea towel. This lets it breathe without drying out too fast.
3. Use a Bread Box (If You Have One)
A good old-fashioned bread box strikes the perfect balance between air circulation and humidity. It’s like a cozy home for your sourdough.
4. Freeze What You Won’t Use in 2–3 Days
Sourdough freezes beautifully! Slice the loaf first, so you can grab a piece or two whenever you need it. Wrap slices in parchment or foil, pop into a freezer-safe bag, and store for up to 2 months.
To reheat:
Toast slices straight from frozen
Or pop into a 180°C oven for 10 –15 minutes to revive that crusty goodness
5. Revive Stale Bread Like a Pro
Day-old and feeling dry? Don’t toss it. Lightly spritz your loaf with water, wrap in foil, and bake in a hot oven (about 180°C) for 10 minutes. The steam will work magic on the crust.
Bonus: What to Do With Leftovers
Even the toughest ends of a sourdough loaf can find new life:
Croutons for salad or soup
Breadcrumbs for cooking
French toast or bread pudding for something indulgent
At Tutu’s, we believe good bread deserves to be savoured to the very last bite. Our sourdough loaves are naturally leavened, made with just three ingredients: flour, water, and salt, and a lot of time. No preservatives. No shortcuts.
